As seen in the series of photos, in response to cyclical hormonal levels, this in vitro system dynamically alters its structure, passing through several stages including
- thickening
- production of mucus cells
- sloughing of the cornified layer
This dynamic structural modelling is a first in vitro.
It offers a brand new approach to testing the estrous cycle, and modelling the effects of new therapeutics from both biochemical and structural perspectives simultaneously.
This in vitro system is currently available from rat. Development of a human equivalent is currently underway.
